Geographic Information: for a better world
29 – 30 September 2016
Call for abstracts
We have access to an unprecedented quantity of geographic information and to sophisticated means of acquiring, manipulating and disseminating it. In this era of ever-expanding open data, participative geographies like citizen science and humans as sensors, connectivity, mobility, and analytics enable the gathering and use of heterogeneous information to help improve our understanding of the world.
Geographical perspectives play an increasingly important role in our technology-oriented society where the study of place, space and process can help us understand and solve real-world problems. Using geographic information we can actively construct and present different aspects of the world.
Our society depends on an understanding and managing rapidly changing environments. Threats posed by hazards are seen almost daily in the news. Growing urban populations will make increasing demands. Resource developments in remote environments are needed to meet them. Now, more than ever, we need to be able to access and use geographical information to examine spatial interrelationships and potential conflicts.
Within this context EUROGEO 2016 will focus on the transformative nature of geographic information, the ways geographers are thinking spatially about people, environments, and the relationships between them and how they can contribute to the achievement of a better world.
We will plan to address cross-cutting issues such as:
- How can geographic information be used to support a way of observing and appreciating the relationships we have with the world around us?
- Does the use of geographic information give us the necessary tools we need to think spatially, navigate our world and make wise decisions about people, environments, and the relationships between them?
- How should education respond to the ever-increasing importance of geographic information?
EUROGEO 2016, Geographic Information: for a better world will provide opportunities to demonstrate the dynamic nature of geographical research of changing natural and social settings, studying the world, its landscapes, places, people and their relationships with the environment.
The event is run in conjunction with the Real Sociedad Geographica, the Asociación de Geógrafos Españoles and the Geography Department at Malaga University.
