EUROGEO 2011 Annual Meeting and Conference
More than 120 geographers from 23 countries participated in the 2011 conference of EUROGEO held at the “Titania Hotel” in Athens, Greece, June 2 - 5, 2011.
Sessions were very lively with a host of interesting presentations and considerable debate. The presentations are available from conference Web site. Special sessions were held of the IGU Mediterranean Special Interest Group (presentations) and the digital-earth.eu Comenius Project (presentations).
A new EUROGEO Presodium was elected at the Annual General Meeting and reports from the President, Secretary General and Treasurer were approved. More details

EUROGEO hosts iGuess GIS training wokshop
EUROGEO hosted and organised a one-week Comenius training seminar for Geography teachers and lecturers in Athens. In all, 28 teachers attended the training. They were advised by EUROGEO and as a result many received EU grants from their National Comenius Agencies.
The course was about spatial thinking and the use of GIS in llearning and teaching. The teachers learned about the practical and pedagogical uses of ArcGIS in schools and in teaching geography. They also created their own exercises and presented their work. Teachers were awarded certificates at the conference dinner and ESRI Europe provided free 1 year licences for their schools. Thank you ESRI.
The course was based on the very successful iGuess Project - Integrating GIS in secondary education in several subjects.

Lobbying at the EU Digital Agenda Assembly
EUROGEO took part at the European Commission Digital Agenda Assembly for Europe, in Brussels June 16-17. More than 1500 delegates attended the meeting organised by the European Commission and the European Parliament. EUROGEO was the only geographical organisation to participate and lobby for location-based aspects..
The goals of the meeting was to review the progress of the EU's Digital Agenda, present and discuss the issues and inform decision makers about how to deal with them in the future initiatives related to the use of ICT in business, industry, education and society under the EU Digital Agenda 2020. The digital-earth:eu Network first meeting announced http://www.digital-earth.eu
The first meeting of the digital-earth.eu Comenius Network will take place in Salzburg in early July 2011 in collaboration with the Learning with GeoInformation conference. Colleagues interested in joining/participating in the network should visit http://www.eurogeography.eu/digital-earth.html
The digitalearth.eu Network is an EC funded project (2011-2013) to connect teachers and educators using geoinformation and geo-media in teacher education and the school classroom. EUROGEO is a founder member of this EC funded network.
Geo-media is the visualisation of information from different media sources and is concerned with digital content based on place, position and location. Innovative approaches to teaching and learning are needed to effectively study local, regional, national, international and whole earth environments.
The digitalearth.eu network aims to link diverse, unconnected centres around Europe where geoinformation and geo-media use is well developed, with the expectation that products, resources, experiences and ideas will be shared between them.

Council of Europe publishes the first European legal standard on global learning
The Council of Europe has recently published a recommendation that member states including the UK “allow education for global interdependence and solidarity to play a more prominent role in the context of educational policy making.” This recommendation represents a legal standard at the European level, and will be useful in advocating for greater global learning in UK education policy and practice. EUROGEO as an association was set up in 1979 with strong support from the European Commission. Members from national association formed a European association to represent the viewsd and opinions of geographers in different European countries to the EU . The assoiciation has had participatory status at the Council of Europe sonce 1989. EUROGEO has established its legal home in Belgium as an International not-for-profit organisation. Himalayan Glaciers Are Thinning
Seventy-five per cent of the Himalayan glaciers are thinning, states a recent analysis of satellite pictures taken by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). But before the alarm button is pressed, more detailed studies must be conducted, say scientists. Of the 10,000 glaciers present in the Himalayan ecosystem, ISRO studied 2,190. New Map Reveals Giant Fjords beneath East Antarctic Ice Sheet

China: Drought Raises Questions about Climate Change
China's drought along its biggest river, the Yangtze, is for some scientists a demonstration of how global warming could increasingly disrupt the complex dance of air flows, rains and waterways that feeds dams and farming heartlands. Many older farmers around Lake Honghu, part of the drought-stricken Yangtze River basin, said summers and winters had seemed warmer in the past decade, and some said overall rainfall had shrunk, although impressions varied. http://bit.ly/j8idJc

Being an examiner can inspire fresh ideas and new approaches to teaching, and keep teachers in touch with developments in education. This means they can better prepare students for examinations and increase standards in the classroom.
Marking is carried out online, giving our examiners the flexibility of working from home. The marking period is between May and July, and examiners can expect to earn between £650 and £1000 for their work.
