EUROGEO hosts iGuess GIS training wokshop

EUROGEO hosted and organised a one-week Comenius training seminar for Geography teachers and lecturers in Athens. In all, 28 teachers attended the training. They were advised by EUROGEO and as a result many received EU grants from their National Comenius Agencies.

The course was about spatial thinking and the use of GIS in llearning and teaching. The teachers learned about the practical and pedagogical uses of ArcGIS in schools and in teaching geography. They also created their own exercises and presented their work. Teachers were awarded certificates at the conference dinner and ESRI Europe provided free 1 year licences for their schools. Thank you ESRI.

The course was based on the very successful iGuess Project - Integrating GIS in secondary education in several subjects.

The digital-earth:eu Network first meeting announced http://www.digital-earth.eu

The first meeting of the digital-earth.eu Comenius Network will take place in Salzburg in early July 2011 in collaboration with the Learning with GeoInformation conference. Colleagues interested in joining/participating in the network should visit http://www.eurogeography.eu/digital-earth.html

The digitalearth.eu Network is an EC funded project (2011-2013) to connect teachers and educators using geoinformation and geo-media in teacher education and the school classroom. EUROGEO is a founder member of this EC funded network.

Geo-media is the visualisation of information from different media sources and is concerned with digital content based on place, position and location. Innovative approaches to teaching and learning are needed to effectively study local, regional, national, international and whole earth environments.

The digitalearth.eu network aims to link diverse, unconnected centres around Europe where geoinformation and geo-media use is well developed, with the expectation that products, resources, experiences and ideas will be shared between them.

If you would like to be a partner in the project, visit http://www.eurogeography.eu/digital-earth.html

Did you know?

Physical Geography and Hazards

Himalayan Glaciers Are Thinning
Seventy-five per cent of the Himalayan glaciers are thinning, states a recent analysis of satellite pictures taken by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). But before the alarm button is pressed, more detailed studies must be conducted, say scientists. Of the 10,000 glaciers present in the Himalayan ecosystem, ISRO studied 2,190. The research organisation claims 3.75 per cent of the total glacial area was lost in 15 years—between 1989 and 2004. http://bit.ly/lPg4qI

New Map Reveals Giant Fjords beneath East Antarctic Ice Sheet
Scientists from the U.S., U.K. and Australia have used ice-penetrating radar to create the first high- resolution topographic map of one of the last uncharted regions of Earth, the Aurora Subglacial Basin, and immense ice-buried lowland in East Antarctica larger than Texas. http://bit.ly/mUgx6P

Climate

China: Drought Raises Questions about Climate Change
China's drought along its biggest river, the Yangtze, is for some scientists a demonstration of how global warming could increasingly disrupt the complex dance of air flows, rains and waterways that feeds dams and farming heartlands. Many older farmers around Lake Honghu, part of the drought-stricken Yangtze River basin, said summers and winters had seemed warmer in the past decade, and some said overall rainfall had shrunk, although impressions varied. http://bit.ly/j8idJc

Human and Economic Geography

China: Millions Affected By Deadly Downpours
More than five million people are now reported to have been affected by deadly floods in eastern China. This month's flooding - the worst since 1955 - has already left about 170 people dead or missing, reports say. China's disaster alert has been raised to the highest level, four. European News

EU countries required to start keeping 'green balance sheets'
The European Parliament has backed new legislation on 7 June requiring EU countries to harmonise national reporting data on air pollution, green taxes and raw material flows in order to build up Europe-wide "environmental economic accounts". http://bit.ly/lSwKDR

Digital Europe
Citizens, businesses and policymakers must be fully on board if Europe is to realise its digital ambitions. The digital agenda for Europe is the EU strategy to deliver benefits of a digital society and economy for all or, more simply, to make "every European digital". Adopted by the European commission in May 2010, the digital agenda outlined 100 actions for a smarter, more sustainable and inclusive Europe. One year on, it is time to explore achievements so far and consider the next steps http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/c9a6ae6f#/c9a6ae6f/5

EC gives Croatia the green light despite lack of reforms
The European Commission has given the go-ahead for Croatia to become the 28th member of the European Union, a landmark decision that critics say has more to do with politics than real reforms inside the Balkan state. http://euobserver.com/9/32474/?rk=1

The battle for Schengen: More Europe in the next decade
The debate about Bulgaria and Romania's entry into the border-free Schengen area is indicative of the European solidarity starting to crumble, just as the euro-crisis is shaking its foundations http://euobserver.com/9/32517/ ?rk=1

European Green Capital Award 2014 launched
The Commission launched the 2014 European Green Capital Award, which rewards a European city for its environmental efforts. Previous European Green Capitals from 2010 to 2013 were: Stockholm, Sweden; Hamburg, Germany; Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain and Nantes, France. http://bit.ly/jnsGHY

Barroso to Copenhagen: border checks are illegal
One day after Berlin's angry reaction, EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso has warned Copenhagen that its decision to reinstate customs checks at borders is illegal under EU rules. The Danish government maintains the contrary. http://euobserver.com/9/32334/?rk=1

Brussels warns EU states against backtracking on biodiversity
European environment commissioner Janez Potocnik has called on EU member states to support a package of recently-proposed biodiversity targets, amid concerns that a collection of countries led by France is seeking to water down the proposals in order to protect fishing quotas. http://euobserver.com/9/32516/?rk=1
