The digital-earth:eu Network first meeting announced http://www.digital-earth.eu

The first meeting of the digital-earth.eu Comenius Network will take place in Salzburg in early July 2011 in collaboration with the Learning with GeoInformation conference. Colleagues interested in joining/participating in the network should visit http://www.eurogeography.eu/digital-earth.html

The digitalearth.eu Network is an EC funded project (2011-2013) to connect teachers and educators using geoinformation and geo-media in teacher education and the school classroom. EUROGEO is a founder member of this EC funded network.

Geo-media is the visualisation of information from different media sources and is concerned with digital content based on place, position and location. Innovative approaches to teaching and learning are needed to effectively study local, regional, national, international and whole earth environments.

The digitalearth.eu network aims to link diverse, unconnected centres around Europe where geoinformation and geo-media use is well developed, with the expectation that products, resources, experiences and ideas will be shared between them.

If you would like to be a partner in the project, visit http://www.eurogeography.eu/digital-earth.html

Physical Geography and Hazards

Polar project results will drive future policy, says science council
The largest polar research project ever undertaken, which was launched in 2007 as part of the International Polar Year, has yielded a multitude of new policy leads, the International Council for Science said. http://bit.ly/gujiQm

Sooty Himalayan snow 'warms climate, alters monsoons
Black carbon landing on snow may be accelerating the melting of Himalayan glaciers more than atmospheric soot or even greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), according to a study. The effects of this carbon, a key component of soot, could change the timing and intensity of the monsoons; increase the chances of downstream floods and reduce farmers' access to irrigation when they most need it, researchers say. http://bit.ly/dQSq3L

Local factors influence climate change in Antarctica
Scientists in Germany have challenged the traditional assumption that temperature fluctuations in Antarctica are mainly due to climate changes in the northern hemisphere. According to them, major portions of the temperature fluctuations on the continent can be explained equally well by local climate changes in the southern hemisphere. The climate researchers presented their findings in the journal 'Nature' after studying temperature reconstructions based on ice cores. http://bit.ly/eSKEJl

Climate
After Record-Setting Summer, More ‘Mega-Heatwaves’ on the European Horizon
An analysis of modeling results indicated that major heat waves will probably become five to 10 times more likely over the next 40 years, the researchers said, though they concluded that an event with a magnitude reaching that of the 2010 heat wave is unlikely to occur until after 2050. “During the 2001-2010 decade, 500-year long records were broken over approximately 65% of Europe, including Eastern Europe, southwestern-central Europe, the Balkans and Turkey,” they report. http://bit.ly/hh4jvz

Kenya: Climate-linked drought pushes Kenyan farmers to sell land
A growing number of farmers in parts of Kenya’s eastern and north-eastern regions are selling their land and moving to urban areas in search of alternative livelihoods as a severe drought believed linked to climate change makes farming increasing difficult. http://bit.ly/ei8X2S

Canada: Permafrost Melt Soon Irreversible Without Major Fossil Fuel Cuts
Without major reductions in the use of fossil fuels, as much as two-thirds of the world's gigantic storehouse of frozen carbon could be released, a new study reported. That would push global temperatures several degrees higher, making large parts of the planet uninhabitable. http://bit.ly/eSaV2F

New climate journal embraces the social sciences
The Nature Publishing Group has launched a new monthly journal devoted to climate change. For the first time in the group’s history the new journal, Nature Climate Change, will regularly solicit and publish research in the social sciences. http://www.nature.com/nclimate/index.html
