Manfred Schrenk will speak on The Spatial Dimension of Smart Citiesschrenk-300

Manfred Schrenk is an urban planner with more then 20 years of experience in urban planning, spatial development, GIS and planning technologies, information and knowledge society, transport planning. He has carried out a wide range of research and consulting activities at national and international levels as part of interdisciplinary projects and teams. In these projects he has acted as a team member and in the last years mainly as team coordinator.

 

Mr. Schrenk holds a degree in Spatial Planning and Regional Science from Vienna University of Technology. He is managing director of “CORP – COnsulting Research Projects“, a private consultancy, as well as chairman of CORP-association that organizes annual international CORPconferences on „Urban Planning, Spatial Development and Information Society“ since 1996 . From 2006-2014 he was the managing director of CEIT – Central European Institute of Technology in Austria. From 2007-2013 he was Vice President and Treasurer of ISOCARP, the International Society of City and Regional Planners.

Assoc. Prof. Gillian Kidman will speak about Geography that is personal, relevant and related to the students’ lives – a geography for all: what might it look like?

Gillian is Associate Professor of Science Education at Monash University, Australia. Her teaching and curriculum design is award winning at both the State and National levels and she was a Lead Writer and Senior Advisor for Australia’s National Curriculum – Australian Curriculum: Science, and Australian Curriculum: Biology materials. Gillian’s particular contribution was in the Science Inquiry Skills strand.

She is the Editor of the journal International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education (IRGEE). Gillian holds the following international leadership positions: Australian Representative – Steering Committee,  International Geographical Union-Commission Geographical Education (IGU-CGE); Group Leader – Sub-Committee for Diversifying Research, (IGU-CGE); President of International Organisation for Science and Technology Education (IOSTE), is on the Board of Directors for Australasian Science Education Research Association (ASERA).

Gillian has research and teaching interests in the sciences and humanities and is particularly interested in inquiry forms of teaching and learning and the potential inquiry pedagogies have for the integration of science with other disciplines. Gillian’s latest co-authored book is Inquiry-based teaching and learning across disciplines: Comparative theory and practice in schools, and she currently has the book Disciplinarity and Educational Inquiry: conceptions and practices under contract.

 

Abstract: While most Geography teachers and educators would agree with the overarching goal of increasing both the number and quality of students who choose to study Geography, we must consider the means by which we achieve such ends. This presentation will consider the small percent of future experts in Geographical fields, but primarily the address will consider the greater proportion of students who do not relate to geography, and who do not study it beyond its compulsory offering. Such students will be asked to vote on geographic legislative policies, exercise eco-consumer choices that impact the quality of life for their families and communities, as well as commit to decisions that impact our interconnected global environments. We need to explore the teaching of geography and how it can be made more interesting and relevant for all global citizens whose everyday actions and decisions will inevitably impact all. Students report that Geography is impersonal, irrelevant and removed from their immediate lives. What would Geography look like if it was personal, relevant and related to the students’ lives – a geography for all?
