What is EUROGEO
EUROGEO is a non-profit scientific and educational
society, legally based under Belgian law. It was founded in 1979. For 30 years EUROGEO
has contributed to the advancement of geography in Europe. EUROGEO
has members from more than 25 countries who share interests in
the theory, methods, and practice of geography. This is represented
through the activities at meetings and conferences, scholarly
publications and the EUROGEO Newsletter. EUROGEO
promotes discussion among geographers and with those in related
fields. The meetings and activities of the association will provide
the opportunity for members to network with others interested
in advancing geography. In November 1979 the Commission of the European Communities initiated a meeting, held in Brussels, of representatives of associations of Geography teachers. At this meeting it was decided to establish a European Standing Conference of Geography Teachers' Associations, which later became known as EUROGEO. The goal was to help promote a European Dimension in the teaching of Geography in schools in Europe and to provide a forum for the discussion of matters that concern the teaching of Geography within Europe.
Initially, membership of the Standing Conference was restricted
to "the countries of the European Community and their neighbours".
At the 1994 plenary meeting of the Standing Conference, it was
decided to widen participation to all the countries of Europe
and to change the name of the association to EUROGEO.
At the 2002 conference in Portugal, EUROGEO elected its first President and established a Presidium or Steering Group. Since this time conferences have been held in Slovenia, Poland and the UK.
With the nature of geographical education changing and the employability of geography graduates no longer dominated by education and teaching, in 2008 EUROGEO changed its target audience to embrace all those concerned with geography. This includes geographers employed in all sorts of careers.
